What Coachability Means (and Why It Matters Most When You’re Stuck)
“Coachable” is one of those words people nod along to without ever defining. And most of us get it wrong — we think it means doing whatever we’re told. It doesn’t.
When you’re stuck — stalling at the same stage, feeling like you’re not enough — the instinct is to grind harder in private. That’s exactly the wrong move. The people who break through aren’t the ones grinding hardest alone. They’re the ones who let someone they trust see what they can’t.
Here’s my definition:
Coachability doesn’t mean blindly following what others tell you to do. It means taking their feedback, distilling it, marrying it with your intuition, and then delivering what matters.
A few things that make it work in practice:
Feeling stuck is the signal, not the shame. It’s the moment to let people in — not to double down alone.
Pick the right person. Start with someone who’s already given you honest feedback. If their first take doesn’t quite land, go back and have them add context. The best coaches expect to calibrate.
Distill, don’t just absorb. Feedback is raw material. Your job is to run it through your own judgment and deliver what actually matters — not to follow every note to the letter.
If you’re stuck right now, coachability is the fastest way out.
This is exactly the kind of thing we practice in my free workshop on Friday, September 18 — a live sneak peek at my Confident Communicator Course. Free, capped at 20 seats. Save your seat →
