Interview with Marina Mogilko Co-Founder of LinguaTrip
Two common pieces of startup advice that get doled out are you need to be in Silicon Valley to start your startup. And you need to cater to customers in the US market. There are some rumblings about how to start a startup outside Silicon Valley. But they don’t get as much attention as those within it.
Moreover, starting up in Silicon Valley is a tall order for founders. There’s the rising cost of housing. The war on tech talent, making it hard to recruit. And a number of challenges facing immigrant entrepreneurs. Hence, founders are on the lookout for alternatives to stay scrappy and survive.
Plus it’s not true that you have to start Silicon Valley. There are a number of startups succeeding outside Silicon Valley.
To help debunk this myth and others, I’ve invited Marina Mogilko who is the co-founder of LinguaTrip. LinguaTrip is an online marketplace that connects language learners around the world to language schools.
In addition to learning how to start your startup, you’ll learn the following from Marina in this episode:
- How Marina and her co-founder initially came up with the idea for LinguaTrip, and began it as an offline business.
- Why they transitioned from offline to online.
- How they attracted customers outside the US.
- Why they decided to hold off on coming to Silicon Valley.
- Finally, how starting up outside Silicon Valley benefited them in building a profitable business that wasn’t beholden to receiving investment.
