Read our interview with Lyndi and get to know this marvelous marketer!
Lyndi you have a very fun life living on a farm right outside of Seattle, but tell us something even more interesting about yourself?
I was proposed to on live Radio! My now husband, Eli and I were guest DJs for the Seattle electronic and techno station C89.5.
How long have been a Marketer?
When have I not been a marketer? I am proud to share and to continue to build from my foundation in customer service. When I wake up I am fired up ready to empower others to make their ideas a reality. I have always loved connecting people to create communities. Great marketing to me is a mix of the best of customer service, sales, and analytics.
I want to understand how and why you ended up becoming a Marketer. What led you to it? What were you doing before?
Startups found me. I was freshly married and looking to take my love for how the internet brought my small business clients new business. I found myself immersed in a startup that in only a few months I was known for mastering and managing three roles. I ultimately took the official title of Search Marketing Specialist. From there I was lured into the Seattle startup scene. Working as a contractor and volunteer for various startups I couldn’t imagine myself in any other world.
Did you have key mentors or people who deeply influenced you?
The list thankfully is long, those who bubble up to the surface are my best friend’s Mom Kathy, her faith in me never wavered. My husband, Eli, who has been my best friend since high school. He cheers me on, re-centers my world and is my link to the grand world of engineering. I also have to give credit to Cody, while he is a thoroughbred horse he has still managed to teach me a great deal about patience, confronting fears and having adventures.
Did you have any life-changing experience that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you were doing today?
Debate class was full so I signed up for DECA and found myself leading the pack in all things business management. Needed to transfer out of wood working, the only class available was HTML and VB programming where I met my husband and got introduced to working with programming and the internet! Luckily destiny seemed to keep me on track even if I was the one who signed up for Debate and Woodworking.
What were the skills you had to acquire? Where and how did you learn those skills?
Sales and I have always been dancing and while my two left feet seem to be fading it’s still something I continue to sharpen. I also had to learn a great deal about analytics, Webtrends did an excellent job igniting my fire for data, loved their online courses! Google adwords, search engine optimization, even managing my own business finances were all things I had to learned. I have enjoyed every step of the way!
Can you give me a brief overview of what it is you do in your work?
Being able to connect my passion for working with people and my love for technology is a bit of a dream. I help people focus. Typically I am approached to assist with creating a strategy for user acquisition. Leveraging online marketing tools to reach, engage and retain a community customers through content marketing, social media, paid and organic search marketing.
What would you say motivates you the most to do what you do?
Seeing an idea that starts out doodled on a napkin and two years later employees 50 people and has customers across the globe, that is appropriately labeled epic. People giving me the opportunity to disrupt rusty markets and refresh the way people think about technology, their cars, their families, their food, and their lives. Powerful!
What are you most excited or passionate about?
Sitting on the beach not too long ago I was imprinted with a new perspective. Poornima shared with her team her passion for passing along the freedoms she had been given, giving others freedom, that is what I want to do, am excited about and what all my dreams revolve around.
What are the personal goals you most want to accomplish in your work?
Credit isn’t something I am hungry for, however I do always strive to get to the performing stage in every team I am on. I want to see us as a group cross the finish line, tired but celebrating because we did it! I try to listen twice as much as I talk, I want to learn as much as I can to better engage and know how to measure my success.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I actually keep a list on my phone of alter-ego careers that include being a Tesla engineer, folk singer and horse summer camp owner.
What do you do after work or to relax in general?
Often I find myself writing to relax, a bit of a workout for my brain. Otherwise you can find me exploring the great outdoors of the NW with my family or horses.
Favorite part about teaching the course?
Engaging with entrepreneurs and startup folks from around the globe is a treat! Refreshing to hear so many people passionate about what they do.
Best Marketing Tip?
Listening is your greatest skill set as a marketer. Listen to customers, listen to your team, and listen to the data.
We have both startup founders and students from larger companies who attend our Lean Product Development course, what are some takeaways students will get from attending your classes?
2013 gave me the opportunity of working with startups, entrepreneurs, and other talented folks from around the globe. They have been introduced to me through Femgineer’s Lean Product Development course. Each one comes to the class with a different story, all with the same goal: learn how to take a product from concept and give it life.
I found myself working with employees that wanted more. Sending them to conferences often meant they handed out a lot of business cards, but they came home overwhelmed and lacking guidance. The best gift I could give them and their business was a boost based on my knowledge and experiences.
Sending people to Femgineer’s Lean Product development course is a worthwhile investment. Students will be coached by industry leaders in product development, design, business management and marketing.
Over eight weeks you and your team will find their fire for product development re-ignited. Through the lense of being scrappy and lean your team will reduce the time it takes to take a product from concept to implementation. Smile as your team will take on projects that are designed from the beginning for users. In my classes you’ll learn:
- How to focus your online marketing efforts by identifying what are must-haves vs. nice to haves
- The importance of content marketing and overcome the fear of writing content
- To track your efforts so that you can measure ROI of all your efforts
The best part of the course is it’s online! Learn from anywhere, and anytime. All class sessions and slides are available for playback for students. Class sizes are kept small to insure students maximize their ability to engage with instructors and peers.
Don’t underestimate the power of investing in yourself and your team!
