Like the daily tides, our emotional response changes moment by moment.
On days when we’re strong, we experience moments filled with angry or even optimism.
On days when we’re tired, we do our best to feign indifference to protect the energy we have left.
It doesn’t make it any easier when people tell us what we should and shouldn’t be feeling.
Each one of us has a story. A story that has imprinted a memory. But that memory may have faded and the emotions that were tied to it have been buried deep in the recesses of their mind.
Now it’s being resurrected. Pulled out of us.
Now it’s revealing the bundle of emotions we thought we had locked away safely. And it overcomes us like a strong wave. All we can do is submit to it. Because if we try to fight it, we’ll drown.
There are going to be a lot of stories, ours and others.
There are going to be people expressing how they feel, both near and far.
Just as you wish to express your stories, they wish to express theirs.
Let them speak.
Let them grieve.
Let them be indifferent, if that’s what makes sense to them right now.
Most importantly, let them be them.
Because in their own way they are also trying to avoid drowning. They are trying to ride their wave of emotions.
Don’t deny them their stories.
After all, you wouldn’t want someone to deny you yours, would you?
