Yeah a lot of times it comes down priorities in life. Your priority to start a business and give up on luxuries. But being cheap for the sake of being cheap is also not worthwhile. Its got to be based on a tradeoff like starting a business in your case. Hope your business is going well!

Nice post :)

I don't know if my parents taught me to scrappy...no I would say they did not. But somehow I still am scrappy. I've always been a bit stingy - he he!

I think I watched my friends who have lots of money, wasting it on frivolous things, and thought what a waste! They could of put that money into building a business, rather than designer clothes and bags.

I think if you have entrepreneurial tendencies, you think more on the lines of the "big picture" and what you need to sacrifice now, to obtain a better outcome.

Couldn't agree more - constraints lead to creativity. My parents provided me & my siblings with all the 'necessities' but for any 'luxuries' we wanted, we had to earn them - that made a big difference, and that's how I started my entrepreneur journey as a 10-year old.

Also, when you deal with someone else's money who has put faith in you, your team & the idea, then in a way you're also kind of ethically responsible to make the right/best use of it - can't get stingy on imp. stuff, yet you can't go easy on others.

This is the camp in Perth:

Should be a laugh, with plenty of learning and Guitar Hero mixed in, so I've heard.

Growing up as a femgineer in a mengineer's world I've mostly worked on all male teams. Although in college my teams were more balanced and we still got a ton done and had fun. And I think the skew is mostly because of the numbers, hopefully I can play a small part in helping to change that. But regardless of what your team composition or whether you're in a startup or not, treating people fairly and respectfully is the only way to build a happy and productive team long term. I think too many people get caught up in being results oriented and I've definitely suffered from this syndrome in the past couple months. Fortunately I have good mentors and a team that keeps me in check!

Gav - What Ruby camp are you going to? Yeah Flex is still the prettiest and I'm still contemplating it for BizeeBee. There are a lot of good JS based libraries out there that do graphs like Raphael and HighCharts but nothing compares to Flex.

Well, the reason my friend wants me to learn Flex is that it's what he develops in and he'd like me to help him with his project. I'm not sure why he picked it but he's the experienced developer and I'm but the padawan. On a nice note, I found out Adobe gave me a free license for Flash Builder 4 as I'm currently studying which I thought was very cool. Not saying I'll pledge allegiance because of freebies but I think it's brilliant if software companies hand out free licenses to students.

As for lagging behind, don't worry, can't be worse than me (: I've taken on a fair bit this year so I haven't been able to work on these goals much - though I'm off to a Ruby camp in a few months so I'd like to have at least a bit of knowledge so my head doesn't explode in front of everyone else.

Nice post. It's good to hear what people care about, to better think of ways to take good care of them. Also, it's always good to hear female opinions on issues like this. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but there seems to be a skew toward male stories in the engineering / startup world. :-)

Poornima,

When the time comes, consider looking at QActiveRecord
