Femgineer Goals for 2010

Every year I make the usual new year’s  resolutions to be healthier, friendlier, calmer, cheaper, smarter, and so forth.  But, I don’t actually set goals for how I want to become a better developer!  So I decided that I’d put together a list of skills I want to have, and goals I want to accomplish by the end of 2010.

I’m also going to post the best tutorials and troubleshooting tactics I come across while meeting my goals.

1. Learn Ruby on Rails

2. Learn Objective-C and Create an iPhone app

3. Learn Adobe Air

4. Read 3 books on software architecture

5. Attend at least 1 developer conference

I’ve got the same first 2 goals, but instead of Air, a friend has challenged me to learn Flex.

Nice! Although I’ve slightly modified my goals, I’m no longer interested in Air. Lagging behind on the reading and Objective-C but there are still 4 months left in the year… Do you think its wise to learn Flex? There are a lot of other charting/graphing solutions out there that are JavaScript based, and would be more browser compatible.

Well, the reason my friend wants me to learn Flex is that it’s what he develops in and he’d like me to help him with his project. I’m not sure why he picked it but he’s the experienced developer and I’m but the padawan. On a nice note, I found out Adobe gave me a free license for Flash Builder 4 as I’m currently studying which I thought was very cool. Not saying I’ll pledge allegiance because of freebies but I think it’s brilliant if software companies hand out free licenses to students.

As for lagging behind, don’t worry, can’t be worse than me (: I’ve taken on a fair bit this year so I haven’t been able to work on these goals much – though I’m off to a Ruby camp in a few months so I’d like to have at least a bit of knowledge so my head doesn’t explode in front of everyone else.

Gav – What Ruby camp are you going to? Yeah Flex is still the prettiest and I’m still contemplating it for BizeeBee. There are a lot of good JS based libraries out there that do graphs like Raphael and HighCharts but nothing compares to Flex.

This is the camp in Perth:

Should be a laugh, with plenty of learning and Guitar Hero mixed in, so I’ve heard.

Wow that looks like a lot of fun! If wasn’t running a company I’d totally be down for hacking down under :)
